LONG BEACH BLUES FESTIVAL
1992
This was unusual year for this event. The Blues Festival went out of CSULB campus
where it had been held for a long time, and went to the Shoreline Aquatic Park near
downtown Long Beach right by the ocean.
The headliners were rather unusual as well. The king of rock 'n' roll Chuck Berry
played on Saturday, and James Brown closed out the event on Sunday. Irma Thomas'
show was one of the highlights this year as she made the audience feel as if they
were in New Orleans enjoying the Mardi Gras. James Brown was good, too but it took
too much time setting up his stage (I remember there was like more than one hour
intermission!) and he came on the stage around the time the show was supposed to
be over. And his show was a full set lasting about 90 minutes!
Overall the music was good, but I didn't like the venue as the parking was terrible,
and I simply thought the atmosphere was much better at CSULB campus. It seems that
KLON thought the same way as they moved the festival back to the old CSULB campus
the following year.
